Oh I so love this poem! It holds such beauty and wisdom. I think about it when I’ve seen Mount Rainier and I know I will remember it when I am with someone who is near death and sees something I don’t.

Heartbreaking.

And is in conversation now in my mind with “The Thermal Stair,” by W. S. Graham, which I encountered for the first time recently via Jeremy Noel-Tod’s substack. That one also a poet and a painter, though the emphases are different. But something of what is shared in such a friendship runs through both. Yours will stay with me for a long time.
