Oh I so love this poem! It holds such beauty and wisdom. I think about it when I’ve seen Mount Rainier and I know I will remember it when I am with someone who is near death and sees something I don’t.
And is in conversation now in my mind with “The Thermal Stair,” by W. S. Graham, which I encountered for the first time recently via Jeremy Noel-Tod’s substack. That one also a poet and a painter, though the emphases are different. But something of what is shared in such a friendship runs through both. Yours will stay with me for a long time.

I so love this poem. It holds so much of that time for us all, all through those moments holding Joe. Xoxo
What a moving poem! “Marine light…” All of it.
Fills my heart. What a beauty.
Wow ... the message here, the clarity of the poem. No wonder Rattle wanted it
So beautifully poignant! A dying friend teaching one how to live…..
Heartbreaking.
