I feel honored to be “on your list.” And I keep meaning to share with you X.P. that my signed copy is #42 which is the Death card and if you know me and my writing that card is so ironic as I continue to struggle with my husband’s Death almost 8 years ago. The universe has a strange sense of humor.

Laura, the honor is all mine. And, yes, the synchronicity and, as you say, the universe's strange sense of humor! Your comment brings to mind a passage in Doris Lessing's "The Four-Gated City," where the protagonist recalls the words of her dying father: "A funny thing, laughter, what's it for?"

My pleasure, X. P., to be on the list. I don't remember if I told you - it's stunningly beautiful in both content and physical form. Well done, you!

My honor to have you there, and to have had you as a first reader of the manuscript. And thanks for your kind words. You, being you, may well have noticed a revision I owe to your eye, ear, and heart. Have you found it?

I know where it is - and you shared the revision with me when you made it. I haven't looked for it. Yet. The book is on my husband's nightstand. He doesn't usually read poetry unless it's mine, but he's trusting me that Mortal Sugar is well worth the read. (And the re-read, which I look forward to.)

Then you missed it! (Now I remember the earlier revision, based on syllable count--one more to thank you for.) Let me know when you find the other one. It's subtle. And I hope Jody enjoys the book.

Your generosity of spirit and commitment to community are so appreciated, X.P.!

Awww.

It's paradoxical. Ambivert that I am, what makes community possible--tolerable--for me is the solitude and relative isolation of my little office in the desert.

I love working in an art form so marginal that we can easily have direct contact with, and even apprentice ourselves personally to, the contemporary masters in our field.
